Your questions answered.

It usually includes buildings, contents, and equipment cover, along with public liability, employer’s liability for volunteers or staff, and trustee indemnity. Optional extensions can include event cover, money cover, and legal expenses cover.

Yes. Even if the building is owned by a charity or local authority, you still need cover for public liability, trustees, and hirers. Insurance ensures that anyone organising or attending activities in the hall is properly protected.

One off hirers of your facility might not have their own insurance.  Some policies can be extended to include hirers’ liability (but might not automatically do so).  Hirer liability protects the village hall if an occasional hirer accidentally causes damage to the building or injures someone due to their negligence. It is a rare occasion where you can extend your insurance policy to protect someone other than the insured (your village hall or community centre).  Hirer Liability is not the same as public liability for regular hiring groups, and it normally applies only to non commercial, occasional bookings where the hirer does not have their own insurance.  You should still ensure that all regular bookers of your hall have their own insurance in place.

Again, village hall insurance can extend to cover events such as fairs, exhibitions, or private functions. Insurers will want to know the type and frequency of activities that take place.  It is normally very important to understand the attendance of the event and also what is taking place (e.g. facepainting, inflatables, sports) as well as which of those activities is being run by a third party.

Yes. Access Insurance can arrange cover for listed or heritage buildings. The policy can include specific provisions for alternative materials and rebuilding costs appropriate to older structures.  We can give much more tailored advice to custodians of listed village hall buildings.
