Amateur Dramatic Societies

For groups that do not own a building but put on regular productions, we provide flexible cover that travels with you. We can help with:

Money Cover: Protection for cash taken from ticket sales or programme sales at the door, including at volunteer homes overnight

Public Liability: We can arrange specific cover for one-off events or an annual policy that covers your regular activities, meetings, rehearsals and performances.

Event Cancellation Cover: Financial protection if you are forced to cancel a performance due to reasons beyond your control, such as venue closure.  This is typically available on single event policies but if you are concerned about the costs following a cancellation, it should be considered.

Why choose Access?

We are experienced at arranging insurance for community arts organisations. Whether you are a local amateur dramatic society, a youth theatre group or a not-for-profit venue hosting regular performances, we can help.

It protects your group against claims for injury or property damage from the audience or public, such as a trip over a cable during a performance.

  • Some theatre groups do have higher risk features that you should consider and make sure are declared to your insurer.  These are usually activities where there is an elevated risk of injury to performers or staff, fire, structural failure, or third-party injury.

When underwriting a theatre, the following categories are commonly flagged for discussion:
    • Work at height, such as technicians accessing lighting rigs, fly towers, catwalks or trusses when installing, maintaining or changing lighting and stage equipment.
    • Mechanical stage elements including trapdoors, stage lifts, revolving stages, moving platforms and automated scenery systems, where there is potential for falls, crush injuries or mechanical failure.
    • Aerial or physical performance elements such as high wires, aerial silks, trapeze work, acrobatics or gymnastics routines, which can increase the risk of performer injury if not properly controlled.
    • Pyrotechnics and special effects including flame effects, flash powder, theatrical fireworks or smoke effects, which introduce fire and explosion hazards and usually require specialist operators and strict safety procedures.
    • Set construction and scenery movement, particularly where large or heavy set pieces are built, installed or moved during rehearsals or performances.
    • Manual handling risks during load in and load out of sets, staging, sound and lighting equipment.
    • Storage of props, costumes and stage materials, particularly where flammable items, chemicals or fuels for effects are present.
    • Touring productions bringing external staging, equipment or special effects that may introduce unfamiliar risks or require additional oversight.  Sometimes equipment is left in unattended vehicles and this needs special consideration.

Yes, we can include All Risks cover for your theatrical property, including costumes, props and sets, whether they are in storage or at the venue.

Most venues will require you to have your own public liability insurance before they let you hire their space for rehearsals or shows.

If you use volunteers for front of house or backstage work, we can include employers’ liability to protect them if they are injured while helping your production.

We can provide cover for lighting and sound equipment for a specific production, protecting you against theft or accidental damage.  Hired equipment does warrant a specific conversation as some insurers will not cover items owned by third parties.
