Your questions answered.
It protects your organisation against claims for personal injury or property damage from the public, such as a visitor tripping or slipping in the gallery.
Yes, we can arrange specialist insurance for art installations and high-value works to protect you in the case of accidental damage, theft, or vandalism while they are being shown in your gallery.
We can provide cover for artworks while they are in transit to and from your gallery, protecting against damage during loading and transport.
If your community or not-for-profit group runs art classes and workshops, we can advise you on the insurance you need for your activities.
If your not-for-profit gallery relies on volunteers, we can include employers’ liability to ensure they are protected if they are injured while helping you.
Art galleries often display items that are of significant value. Damage can arise from accidental contact by visitors, vibration, environmental changes, or objects being inadequately secured or mounted. Please note that damage from rodents or insects is often excluded from cover and so it is worth ensuring you understand your art gallery insurance policy.
Many galleries regularly move artworks between artists, lenders and other institutions. Transit risk includes damage during packing, handling and loading so insurers often want to know whether specialist fine art transporters and professional packing methods are used.
Installing or removing artworks can present hazards, particularly where large sculptures, suspended pieces or complex installations require lifting equipment, scaffolding or specialist rigging. Manual handling policies are important to prevent injury of staff or volunteers too.
Certain artworks are highly sensitive to temperature, humidity and lighting levels. Insurers may want to understand how galleries monitor and control these conditions, particularly where loan agreements for more valuable pieces specify environmental standards.
Security is a key consideration given the potential value of artworks. Insurers will typically consider CCTV coverage, alarms, controlled access, invigilation and procedures for securing galleries outside opening hours.
Fire could result in significant losses. Insurers may review fire detection and suppression systems, electrical safety, and whether artworks are positioned near lighting equipment or other heat sources.
Art galleries are open to the public, often attracting large visitor numbers. Insurers may want to understand visitor flow, supervision, and how trip hazards, temporary structures or interactive exhibits are managed.
Storage areas should be secure and suitable for the safe preservation of artworks. Insurers may consider racking systems, environmental conditions and security arrangements within storage spaces.
Handling delicate or valuable works carries a risk of accidental damage. Insurers may want to understand the training provided to staff or contractors responsible for moving, packing or installing artworks.
Many galleries host private views, receptions or corporate events. These can increase public liability exposure due to higher visitor numbers, alcohol consumption and catering equipment being used within exhibition spaces.
